BOO DYER & IAN MCKAY

A WORK IN PROGRESS

Most of what we are ‘about’ is explained on the other pages of our website, but if you are after ‘our story’, that's more complex. Certainly, we can see that we have both been raised out of a rich and varied ancestry – working people who were islanders, boat builders, brickfield labourers, railwaymen, cooks, keepers of livestock, stonemasons, artists, and so on. To cut to the chase here, we are the sum of many parts, but as William Morris once wrote, 'the past is not dead, it is living in us, and will be alive in the future which we are now helping to make,' and we identify with that.

Of course, we could post some persuasive PR copy on this page (as per the norm), telling you about how we are a ‘creative phenomenon’, and that we’ve pulled some extraordinary things out of the box when required. Equally, we could have a go at some reverse psychology marketing and tell you that, contrary to what you may have been told, we're actually quite accomplished in terms of our mindful inactivity, possessing finely-honed skills in doing absolutely nothing with imperturbable poise and absolute self-possession. Neither would be particularly helpful, though.

Probably like you, we are still a work in progress. If we had to pin down what we're really 'about', we'd likely summarise by saying that we're projects people – writing, making, publishing, etc. – but that's not all of it. Somewhere down the line, we'll add to this page with a few untold moments that we are re-assembling from the cutting room floor of life, and no doubt it will all connect up in some way. Whether we're working individually or collaboratively, we tend to find that it does. If you would like to know more, just ask us. We’re actually quite approachable.
