Boo Dyer

Born 1973, Boo spent her early years as an islander, living in a small village on the Isle of Wight before moving to the mainland. Though she began her professional life as a fully-trained chef and has an ongoing research interest in historic recipes, she always maintained a fervent interest in making things that reflect her fascination with the natural world, too, and her current craft work and traditional basketry offer a good example of this. As well as being a maker of traditional and contemporary craft work, Boo maintains the distribution network and logistics for Hatchet Green Press, liaising with our three main book distributors – previously she has worked as the Central Resources Manager for one of the UK's biggest media distributors, where she oversaw the supplying of over 300 stores throughout the UK.

From Island to Highlands

From Island to Highlands

"I recently found a diary entry from my childhood that says it all, really – it reads: 'This afternoon we went pond dipping, me and Tracy caught water boatmen, water beetles, gnat larvae. It was a very enjoyable day. The food was lovely.' I think that my interests have always been evenly split between the wonders of nature and a love for food. Having been born an islander in a quiet village, I took my love of nature to the mainland with me and, from an early age, I learned a great deal about cooking from my mother, too – as well as utility crafts and basketry from my grandmother who remained an islander until she died. When we relocated Hatchetgreen to a small village in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland, in many ways it felt like a 'coming home', even though I am now over 700 miles away from where I was born."

On Basketry

On Basketry

"As a basket maker I specialise in foraging baskets, utility baskets, and historical replicas, but I also deliver basketry tuition on a one-to-one basis and as group workshops. My workshops take place around the Northwest Highlands and are usually limited to ten students per group, enabling those taking part to get the most out of each session. One-to-one tuition can be arranged for you, or as a gift for somebody who wishes to try their hand at basketry for the first time, maybe. Further details about the courses I offer are available on my Enquiry Page."

Managing Hatchet Green Press

At Hatchet Green Press, we take pride in offering a personalised service to both our readers and authors alike, and that extends to our business relationships with booksellers and trade customers, too. All our distribution needs are personally handled by Boo, therefore (as well as the secure processing of online orders, management of trade accounts, and the dispatch of every outgoing consignment). Running a small independent press is not just about having the luxury of working on projects that we feel passionate about, but also about fulfilling orders and overseeing the distribution of our books with the same level of personal service that we would like to receive as customers ourselves. If you have a book order query, please contact Boo Dyer.
