From Island to Highlands
"I recently found a diary entry from my childhood that says it all, really – it reads: 'This afternoon we went pond dipping, me and Tracy caught water boatmen, water beetles, gnat larvae. It was a very enjoyable day. The food was lovely.' I think that my interests have always been evenly split between the wonders of nature and a love for food. Having been born an islander in a quiet village, I took my love of nature to the mainland with me and, from an early age, I learned a great deal about cooking from my mother, too – as well as utility crafts and basketry from my grandmother who remained an islander until she died. When we relocated Hatchetgreen to a small village in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland, in many ways it felt like a 'coming home', even though I am now over 700 miles away from where I was born."
"As a basket maker I specialise in foraging baskets, utility baskets, and historical replicas, but I also deliver basketry tuition on a one-to-one basis and as group workshops. My workshops take place around the Northwest Highlands and are usually limited to ten students per group, enabling those taking part to get the most out of each session. One-to-one tuition can be arranged for you, or as a gift for somebody who wishes to try their hand at basketry for the first time, maybe. Further details about the courses I offer are available on my Enquiry Page."
"Genuine craftsmanship is beautiful in more ways than one. First there is the beauty of the work itself; secondly there is the beauty of the work put into it; and thirdly there is the usefulness of it. Your baskets are beautiful in all of these aspects."
