Contrary to belief, early revolutionary socialists had a passionate interest in the protection of nature. Zapovedniks are areas of the former Soviet Union intended to be kept "forever wild", and Lenin was a great believer in them. They offer nature the highest degree of protection with some areas being restricted to the public. With conservationists frequently highlighting that The New Forest National Park is ‘at breaking point’, resulting from the pressures of tourism, over-grazing by New Forest Commers who have rights to graze common land, and a number of issues pertaining to the mismanagement of the Forest by the National Park Authority, the Russian conservationist Anna Kolchevska issues a timely polemic on what will befall the New Forest as we know it today if a radical approach is not undertaken to develop ‘no-go-areas with ‘the Park’. Is there a case for parts of it having 'Zapovednik status'? she asks.
